Keelung Air Raid Shelter

Year: 2021
Category: Landscape Design

Keelung is a port city located in Taiwan with a significant amount of air raid shelters. In this project, we focused on a shelter located in the centre of the city. We created a tower at the entrance of it and preserved the original natural structure with a newly constructed pavement and water tray inside.

A lighthouse outside of the shelterA lighthouse-inspired tower has been constructed at the entrance of the air-raid shelter, to make it a noticeable landmark.

The shelter's natural surface is often humid and prone to water drainage. To prevent water from draining onto the pavement, the pavement was designed with a gap between the rock wall, creating a water drainage system.
Part of the natural rock walls contain a higher amount of water. To prevent water from dripping onto the pavement from the ceiling, a steel water tray was constructed to channel the water to the drainage system.
The material of the pavement is made up of local pebbles and abandoned red bricks.
